1995 National Poetry Writing Month Poem 1

1995Smoking cloves in ally bathed in piss and the violet glow of neon signs hoping to catch a glimpse of Kim Gordon’s thigh

My boyfriend, all long eyelashes and silky lingerie helps me sew patches and make mix tapes for girls who

pretend like it never happened

We hand out pamphlets for  boycotts and protests while we

long  for tall buildings

and streets where

we don’t know anyone

Reach into my pocket for money taken from mama’s purse

for lipstick, hair dye, cigarettes, birth control

and the things she would have given me anyway
